Thaipusam 2024 | Thai Poosam

Thaipusam (Thai Poosam, Thaipooyam) is a festival dedicated to Lord Subramanya (Murugan). In 2024, Thaipusam date is January 25.

Thaipusam falls on the Pusam Nakshatra around Thai Pournami, Full Moon day Thai Masam in Tamil Calendar. This festival commemorates victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Soorapadman. It is believed on this day Goddess Parvati blessed Murugan with the ‘Vel’, the popular weapon of Murugan.

Another legend about Thai Poosam tells the story of the curse given by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to Lord Murugan.

Thaipusam is celebrated with great fervor in Tamil Nadu, some parts of Kerala and Karnataka. It is also celebrated in grand manner in Singapore, Malaysia, USA, Mauritius, Thailand (Bangkok), Myanmar, and many other countries where Tamil communities live in considerable numbers.

Batu Caves Murugan Temple of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia attracts approximately a Million devotees during the festival of Thaipusam. Thaipusam is also declared as Public Holiday in most of the places of Malaysia.
