Swami Brahmananda earlier known as Rakhal Chandra Ghosh was born in 1863 in Sikra Kulingram near Basirhat, Kolkata. He was one of the direct disciples of Ramakrishna and the first president of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
Even from his childhood days, he exhibited spiritual qualities and was deeply contemplative by nature. He was not interested in studies and other worldly pleasures. His father was worried about him and got him married at an early age. However, through his wife’s brother, he came into contact with Sri Ramakrishna and received intense spiritual training from the great master.
After Sri Ramakrishna passed away, he spent several years as a wandering monk.
Later when Ramakrishna Math was established, Swami Vivekananda requested him to become the president, for he remembered Sri Ramakrishna’s remark that Rakhal had the making of a King. Swami Brahmananda guided many spiritual aspirants and established the Ramakrishna Order on a firm footing. His instructions to his disciples and devotees are compiled in the book, “The Eternal Companion” which is an inspiring source book for all spiritual seekers.
