18 May 2015 is Somvati Amavasya. Somvati Amavasya (Amasomvar Vrat) is an auspicious to perform Shiva Puja and many other pujas mentioned in the Scriptures. Somvati Amavasya is observed on the No Moon which falls on Somavar (Monday).

18 May 2015 Somvati Amavasya is Jyeshta Amavasya in North Indian Hindi calendars. It is Vaishakh Amavasya in Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Gujarati calendars. And this Amavasya is Vaigasi Amavasai in Tamil calendar, Edavam Month Amavasya in Malayalam calendar and Jyeshta Month Amabashya in Bengali Panji.

The importance or significance of Somvati Amavasya

The importance and significance of Somvati Amavasya is narrated by Bhishma to Dharma Raj in the Mahabharat. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in sacred rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri would considered as highly auspicious.

Performing ritual bath in holy rivers on the day of Somavati Amavasya would provide prosperity, make free from diseases and give peace to souls of ancestors.
