Sri Sakala Theertham Udayavar temple is located in the village named Theerthandathanam, in the district of Ramanathapuram, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The primary deity of this shrine is Theertham Udayavar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Perianayaki.
The holy tree of this temple is Vanni. The holy water of this temple is Sakala Theertham. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Shivagama. This temple is nearly 500-1000 years old in this region. The historical name of this place is Theerthandathanam.
The festivals that are celebrated in this temple are Aadi Amavasysa-new moon day in July-August, Makara Sankranthi (January-February), Thai Amavasya in January-February, Dhanur month and Thiruvadhirai (December-January), Panguni Uthiram (March-April), Pradosha days- 13th day of either new moon or full moon days, Mahasivarathri (February-March), Chithirai New Year Day (April-May), Navarathri in Purattasi (September-October), Vinayaka Chaturthi, Aani Tirumanjanam (June-July), Iypasi Annabishekam and Skanda Sashti (November-December) are celebrated in the temple.
This is a west facing shrine, which as per scriptures is very sacred. The temple is open during normal hours of the day that is from 7.30 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.
Lord Shiva is a swayambu murthy in this temple. It is to be remembered that Mother Goddess has been perfectly installed with great devotion. During all the important religious day and auspicious days, the shrine remains open for long duration. It is always thronged by devotees and pilgrims. It is the most sought after temple in this district and in south India.
