Is Rakshabandhan on 25 August or 26 August in 2018? There are some clear indications from Akhil Bhartiya Jyotish Parrishad and the renowned astrologers based in North India and South India that Rakshabandhan should be observed on 26th August and not on 25th August.
Why is the question raised?
Shravan Purnima begins at 3.16 PM on 25th August and ends at 5.25 PM on 26th August. As per the Hindu Panchangam, the Purnima thithi is on 26th as it prevails through the Sunrise time on the particular day.
Why is Rakshabandhan not observed on 25 August?
But Rakshabandhan is observed on the Aparahan Vyapthi (Madhyahna Vyapthi) or Pradosh Vyapthi Purnima tithi.
Based on the above aspect, Rakshabandhan should be observed on 26th August, Sunday. But in some areas, as Purnima prevails on 25th also.
What Purushartha Chintamani says about Rakshabandhan celebration?
Purushartha Chintamani, one of the standard religious books for festivals and celebrations, states
‘Yada Purnima Muhurta Dvya or Traya madhye Kinchit Nyoona tada Aparanhnhe sarvatha tad Abhaavat, Pradosha Pashchime Bhage Bhadrante dinvat Karma cha Aacharet.’
Which means, when Purnima prevails for less than 144 minutes i.e. three muhurats, then the previous day should be observed as Rakhi Festival.
Vishti or Bhadra Karana factor on Rakshabandhan, 26 August 2018
There are some other aspects like Bhadra Karana (Vishti Karana) which is a dominating Panchanga aspect in deciding the Rakshabandhan festival. According to Akhil Bhartiya Jyotish Parrishad, this is not an important aspect as Bhadra is not there on this day. Hence, we can avoid the aspect of Bhadra and celebrate the festival on 26th August.
What Dharmasindhu says about Rakshabandhan Muhurat?
Dharmasindhu, the prominent Hindu religious book of festivals and Muhurats, says Apararahan Time (Afternoon Time) is the most preferred Time to tie Rakhi and observe Rakshabandhan rituals. And the better alternative time would be Pradosha Time. As the Bhadra Karana prevails through Aparahan Time on 26th August, Pradosha Time would be most preferred for Rakshabandhan rituals.
