Polala Amavasya Puja or Shravana Amavasya Vrata – Dedicated to Poleramma

Polala Amavasya Puja is observed on the Amavasya (No moon day) during Shravan masam. Polala Amavasya is dedicated to Goddess Poleramma, who is considerd as the Goddess for protection of children. In 2022, Polala Amavasya date is August 27.

Polala Amavasya – Sheetala Saptami:

Polala Amavasya is mainly observed in Andhra Pradesh and in some parts of Karnataka. Polala Amavasya Devata, Goddess Poleramma, is Goddess of the diseases like Chicken-Pox and Small Pox.

A similar festival called ‘Sheetala Saptami is celebrated in North India. Poleramma, an aspect of Goddess Parvati Devi, is very similar to the North Indian Goddess, Sheetala Mata. In Tamilnadu Mariamman is worshipped in a similar way.

Polala Amavasya is celebrated as Pithori Amavasya in North Indian states and Pola in Maharashtra and some other regions of North India.

Polala Amavasya – dedicated to Cattle

As part of the celebrations, the farmers perform marriage to cow and bull in a traditional way.

Because the cattle are treated as a part of a farmer’s family, these people first bath the animals and decorate them with colours. Garlands and colour papers are tied even on the horns of the animal.

Later, they are moved around Lord Anjaneya temples for ‘pradakshina’ before performing the marriage. A priest was be called to perform the marriage, who followed the same tradition of performing an ordinary marriage. A drink made from jaggery and a few other ingredients was given to these animals. Then both the animals are tied at one place.
