Karkidaka Vavubali at Papanasam Beach, Varkala (Kerala)

Karkidaka Vavubali is a famous ritual celebrated at Papanasam Beach (Varkala Beach) in Kerala. In 2020, Karkidaka Vavu date is July 20, Monday.

Outside Thiruvananthapuram, Varkala Papanasam beach records the most number of attendees during ‘vavu bali’, next only to Thiruvallam Sree Parasurama Temple.

Devotees take the holy dip during the vavubali at the beach. TDB will make proper arrangements to look after the rituals and the safety measures at the beach.

Karkadika Vavubali is similar to that of Pitru Paksha Shraddh or Mahalaya Shraddh Paksha observed in other places of India. Pitru Tharpanam (bali) is performed on this day for dead ancestors to please their souls and to route them to the Heaven. Malayalam people also believe that performing Karkadika Vavubali gives them fortune and prosperity.
