Kala Bhairava Ashtami 2023 | Mahakal Bhairav Astami

Kalabhairava

Kalabhairava

Kala Bhairava Ashtami, also known as Mahakal Bhairav Astami or Kalabhairav Jayanti, is an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Kalabhairav, fierce form of Lord Shiva. In 2023, Kalabhairavashtami (Kalbhairav Jayanti) date is December 5.

According to Telugu Calendars, Kala Bhairava Ashtami is celebrated on December 20, Wednesday (Margashira Masa Shukla Ashtami).

It is observed on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in Margashirsh month as per traditional North Indian Hindu calendar. As per the other calendars, it falls on Kartik Krishna Ashtami. Devotees of Lord Shiva observe fast on this day and worship the Lord with utmost fervor.

Kalashtami is observed in every month on the eighth day after Purnima. But the Margashirsh Krishna Ashtami is very auspicious as the day that marks Mahakaal Bhairav Jayanti.

It is believed that on this day, Lord Kala Bhairav appeared on Earth. Mahakaal bhairav, the presiding deity of Varanasi and Ujjain, is incarnated to behead head-strong Brahma. The legend or the story of Kalbhairav and his divine avatar is mentioned in the Shiva Maha Purana.
