India is a country which has a vast heritage and rich culture and every corner of the country has its own speciality in its very own way. One such place which epitomises the true essence on India is Mayiladuthurai. It was earlier famously known as Mayavaram and is famous for its rich cultural as well as religious heritage. Mayuranathaswami Temple is one of the most sought after temple in this region.
Mayiladuthurai is located 281 Km south of Chennai and 70 Kms northeast of Thajavur. It is a place of scenic beauty and is located in Tamil Nadu and conveniently connected by Road, Rail and Air too. State Highways SH-23 and 64 pass right through the town and it is well connected by rail with most of the major cities in the southern parts of India. Mayiladuthurai is also connected by air, though the nearest airport is in Trichy which is located around 130 Kms from the town.
The most recommended and preferable mode of transport is either the road or rail. Though there are those who prefer to travel by air till Trichy and later travel by road. Most of the local air carriers are connected from major cities to Trichy and hence can be easily accessible by air too. The road and rail network is spread over in a planned way so as to ensure smooth moving in and out of tourists as well as locals. The bus services are one of the best and can be easily compared to the facilities provided in big cities and the roads are well maintained and hence travel by road is the most used mode of transport. The bus depot at Mayiladuthurai has all the basic amenities for public use such as restaurants, convenience stores, toilets etc.
To a certain extent the town can also boast of being connected even by sea as the nearest port is at Nagapattinam which is about 52 Kms from Mayiladuthurai.
