Holi festival is celebrated with utmost gaiety in South India states – Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Holi 2024 date is March 24|25.

People in South India worship the Hindu God of Love, Kama (also known as Manmadha, Vasanth) during the festival of colors, Holi.

Puranas describe the tremendous sacrifice of Kamadeva for the sake of Lok Kalyan (Universal peace and prosperity). He aimed an arrow of love on Lord Shiva, who was in a deep meditation without caring the worldly issues. Kamadeva shot the love arrow on Lord Shiva and brought him into the real world.

When Lord Shiva was disturbed from his meditation by Kamadeva Shiva opened his third eye and made the Love God ash. But after recognizing the mistake, Lord Shiva has given him his own form.

To rememorize the eventful sacrifice of Kamadeva, people celebrate the ritual of Kamadahan (a holy bonfire). Kamadahan is done by setting up the holy bonfire with wood and some sacred dravyas. People take away the ash of the holy bonfire to their homes to invite prosperity and peace.

Colourful Event of Holi – Playing Colours in South India:

In South India, people play with colours in a significant manner. In some areas, they avoid mass playing. People use all types of colours like dry, wet and water colours. Nowadays everyone is aware of chemical colours and using eco-friendly and dry herbal colours to avoid side-effects.
