Garuda Panchami Puja is a festival dedicated to Garuda, Lord Vishnus vehicle. In 2023, Garuda Panchami date is August 21. Garuda Panchami vrat is observed on Panchami during Shravan month.  It is widely celebrated as Nag Panchami.

Garuda Panchami celebrates mother and sons love, affection, devotion and bond between each other. The festival is dedicated to Garuda because of his devotion towards his mother Kadhru. Garuda Panchami pooja is mainly observed by married women for the better health and future of their children. This pooja is also observed by newly wedded couples for their marital bliss and prosperous life.

Garuda is the vehicle of Lord Sri Maha Vishnu. Garuda is also worshipped as ‘Dwarapalaka in many temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Garuda is also called as Garuthmantha. During the festival, devotees worship Garuthmantha along with Naga devatas (Serpent Gods).

Garuda Panchami is also celebrated as Manasa Devi Ashtanag Puja in Eastern States of India such as West Bengal, Assam and Orissa. On this day, Manasa, Seroent Goddess, is worshipped.

    Garuda panchami as per our tradition is celebrated by all women married or unmarried. Women will go to the ant hill and offer pooja to naga and rice kolkattai (sweet as well dhal one) is served as naivaidhyam and the mud from the ant hill is brought to home. after that brothers are told to sit on the rangoli and sisters offer pooja to them. Sisters will do vrath and eat only baked food (such as idli or rice kolkattai) oil is completely banned on that day. The story will be recited and the shoulders of brothers were slightly pat by sisters with the sticks of banyan and kanagalai leaves. They pray for the good health and longetivity of brothers.

    GARUDA’s mom was VINATA, not KADHRU. In fact, KADHRU is one of GARUDA’s mortal enemies, being the mother of nagas.
