Devakottai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, Sivaganga

Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple is located in the popular village mentioned as  Devakottai, in the district of Sivaganga, in the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. The important deity of this temple is Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Meenakshi. The festival deity is Sekkizhar.

The holy tree of this temple is Vilwa. The holy water of this temple is Changu theertham. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Kameeyam. This temple is about 500-1000 years old in this region. The historical name of this ancient town is Devakottai.

The festivals of this shrine are 10 day Chithirai festival in April-May , Shivarathri in February-March, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January, Tirukarthikai in November-December, Deepavalli, pongal, New Year days according to the English calendar, Sekkizhar Guru Pooja with abishek and aaradanas are devotionally celebrated on Vaikasi Poora star day (May-June) and Tamil Calendar.

The shrine remains open for all the Hindus who are devotees and pilgrims from early morning hours to late mid-noon and later in the evening hours to dusk. During the important religious days and auspicious days, the shrine remains open for long hours. It is most sought after temple in this district.

Locally, this particular temple is known as “Sekkizhar Temple” among the devotees and pilgrims. The temple is open for all the devotees and pilgrims from 6.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. It is the most sought after temple belong to the ancient temple category. There are shrines for Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava,  Nardana Vinayaka, Somaskandar,  Viswanatha Visalakshi, Maragatha Vinayaka, Baladandayuthapani, Mahalakshmi, Subramanyar, Brahmma, Chandeswara, Chandeswari, Vishnu Durga, Nataraja,  Kannimoolai Vinayaka and Navagragas (9 planets).
