Bhishma Ekadasi, Bheeshma Ekadashi in Magha Masam

Bhishma Ekadashi is observed on Magh Shukla Ekadashi (eleventh day in Shukla Paksh in Magh month). Bhishma Ekadashi 2018 date is January 27/28.

Bhishma Ekadasi is also celebrated as Bhoumi Ekadashi and Jaya Ekadashi. Bhoumi Ekadashi has a great significance. It is one of the most auspicious days to worship Lord Jagannath. In Puri Jagannath temple as well as all over Orissa, it is observed with great fervor.

What is the Significance of Bhishma Ekadashi?

This answer can also solve ‘the legend, story or myth of Bhishma Ekadasi. On this day, the eleventh day during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the month Magh, Bhishma voluntarily gave up his life in Kurukshetra Maha Sangram (on the battle field of Mahabharat war). The incident occurred just after he initiated Dharamaraja (Yudhishtira) into the most powerful and sacred of all mantras (chants), the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram.

Bhishma revealed the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra to Pandavas on the battle field of Kurukshetra for the first time. Because of this, it is also observed as the Birthday of the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram.

Who is Bhishma?

Bhishma was son of King Shantanu and the river goddess Ganga. Shantanu was left alone by Ganga after Bhishmas birth. Bhishma was a great warrior, sage and a perfect man of great renunciation. He was the Commander-in-Chief of the Kaurava armed forces in the Mahabharata war (Kurukshetra Yudh). Bhishma led a celibate life, sacrificing his whole life for the sake of his father, Shantanu.
