Amarnath Yatra 2024 begins on July 1, 2024. Amarnath Yatra begins in July and ends on August 19 on Shravan Purnima (Rakshabandhan festival). Amarnath Yatra is one of the most auspicious yatras or pilgrimages in Hinduism. Amarnath Shivling is formed during the months of July and August in every year.

Usually, it is organized in Shravan maas in Hindu calendar. The dates may vary every year based on the weather conditions and on Shravan Purnima or Raksha Bandhan day in Shravan mahina.

Amarnath Yatra Registration begins in April and ends in June. Anyone between the age of 13 years and 75 years can register for Amarnath Yatra. The users can apply in 446 branches of Punjab National Bank (PNB), Yes Bank and Jammu and Kashmir Bank.

Amarnath Yatra is known as the toughest pilgrimages to complete in Hinduism because of adverse weather conditions. To visit the temple of Baba Amarnath Dham, one has to trek the height of 14,500 feet. Visiting Baba Amarnath Dham is considered as the path to salvation or Moksha as per Hindu beliefs.

The 60 day long annual ‘yatra’ to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in South Kashmir Himalayas will commence in June, the shrine board said.

“To safeguard the safety and security of pilgrims, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) has decided that the yatra will start in June and conclude on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) on August 30,” an official spokesman said in Jammu.

It said pilgrims will be allowed to register date-wise and route-wise for this year’s yatra considering the existing tracks and available infrastructure can handle 7,500 yatris, each day.

The CEO has taken steps for registration of pilgrims through 442 bank branches and has put out advertisements to advise those coming to the shrine to get their compulsory health certificates.

Advanced registration for the journey will start in March, the spokesman said, adding the CEO will take steps to ensure uninterrupted telecom connectivity in the yatra area.

The Board has asked all pilgrims to take precautions for the harsh climate and terrain on the route to the shrine.

It has reviewed the 2024 Yatra Action Plan, including arrangements for medical care, installation of railings and of garbage in a scientific manner.

It may be recalled that since the SASB took control of the yatra in 2001 the number of pilgrims who visited the holy cave were 1.91 lakh during that year, followed by 1.10 lakh in 2002, 1.70 lakh in 2003, four lakh in 2004, 3.88 lakh in 2005, 3.47 lakh in 2006, 2.96 lakh in 2007, 5.33 lakh in 2008, 3.81 lakh in 2009, 4.55 lakh in 2010, 6.21 in 2011, 6.35 in 2012 and 3.54 in 2013, 3.72 lakh in 2014, 3.52 lakh in 2015, 2.21 lakh in 2016, 2.60 lakh in 2017 and 2.85 lakh in 2018.

In 2022, the pilgrimage lasted 43 days from June 30 to August 11 with 3.65 lakh yatris paying obeisance at the 3,880-metre-high holy cave shrine.

The yatra couldn’t be held in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019, the pilgrimage was curtailed for about 15 days ahead of August 5 decision of the Centre to abrogate special status of the erstwhile State and bifurcate it into two union territories.
