Works of Abhinavagupta

One of India’s greatest philosopher, aesthetician, poet, dramatist, theologian and logician – an all rounder for time immemorial is Abhinavagupta. Born in a family of scholars and mystics, during his time phase Abhinavagupta had completed over 35 works based on devotion, religion, philosophy, drama and poems.

The most notable and all time famous work being the religious one-Tantraloka “Light on Tantra “an encyclopedic treatise on all the philosophical and practical aspects of Trika and Kaula. His other religious works of significance are Parātrīśikā, Parātrīśikāvivaraṇa, Mātṛkā and Mālinī, Kramakeli. Bhagavadgītārtha-saṃgraha,Parātrīśikā-laghuvṛtti , Rahasyapañcadaśikā, Laghvī prakriyā, Devīstotravivaraṇa and Paramārthasāra .

Not only religion Abhinavagupta’s contributions in the field of philosophy of aesthetics are also immense. His famous Abhinavabharati a commentary of Natyasastra is noteworthy down the ages. His work on the theory of rasa (aesthetic savor) had given gupta much popularity. Īśvarapratyabhijñā-vimarśini,Īśvarapratyabhijñā-vivṛti-vimarśini , Śivadṛṣtyā-locana ,Padārthapraveśa-nirṇaya-ṭīkā and Prakīrṇkavivaraṇa ,Kathāmukha-tilaka and Bhedavāda-vidāraṇa are other well-known philosophical works of gupta which had given him much recognition.

Abinavagupta was also a great devotional composer and it would be a sin if his greatest works on devotion are not mentioned over here. His devotional poems list includes – Anubhavanivedana, Anuttarāṣṭikā, Krama-stotra ,Bhairava-stava;Dehasthadevatācakra-stotra;Paramārthadvādaśikā,Mahopadeśa-viṃśatikā, Śivaśaktyavinābhāva-stotra, Bodhapañcadaśikā and Paramārthacarcā. Most of these devotional poems are translated into French language too.
Other than devotional hymns gupta is also famous for other poetical works like- Ghaṭa-karpara-kulaka-vivṛti, a commentary on “Ghaṭakarpara” of Kalidasa; Kāvyakauṭukavivaraṇa, a commentary to the “Wonder of Poetry” and Dhvanyālokalocana “Illustration of Dhvanyāloka”.

But it’s a fact of great regret that many of Abinavagupta’s works have no trace on the recent date and are lost. Abinava gupta would always be remembered for his masterpieces.
