Vat Savitri Vrat Today, Vat Purnima, 15 June 2011

Vat Savitri Vrat or Vat Purnima Vrat is observed today, 15 June 2011, all over India. It falls on Jyeshta Purnima day. Purnima begins on 3.38 am on 15 June and ends on 1.43 am on 16 June 2011. It is also observed as Devsnana Purnima in Puri Jagannath temple. Today, Eruvaka Punnami is also celebrated by farming community in Andhra Pradesh.

Vat Savitri Vrat is not mentioned in the Vedas but came into existence in the post Puranic era. The legend of Savitri is mentioned in the Mahabharata. Worshipping Banyan Tree is the main ritual as commemorating Sati Savitri’s triumph over the death of her husband.

Today, Sampurna Chandra Grahan (Total Lunar Eclipse) will occur in the night. It is visible in India for more than 3 hours. It is the one of the longest and darkest lunar eclipse of the century.
