Ugadi or Kannada and Telugu New Year on 4 April 2011

Ugadi or Yugadi marks the Telugu and Kannada New Year day. It is celebrated on Chaitra Pratipada, first day in Chaitra month. In 2011, Ugadi date is April 4, today. This year (2011-2012) is Khara nama samvatsaram (Shalivahana Shaka 1933) in Hindu Panchangam followed in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Eating Ugadi Pachchadi or Bevu Bella, Ugadi Panchanga Sravanam (listening to or reading astrology predictions) are the main rituals of this festival.

It is also known as Sade Teen Muhurat in Hinduism. Other Sade Teen muhurthams are Akshaya Tritiya, Vijaya Dashami, and Kartika Shukla Pratipada. Ugadi, also known as Chandramana Samvatsaradi, is popularly celebrated as Gudi Padwa (Marathi New Year) in Maharashtra.
