Kartik Purnima Shahi Snan during Pushkar Mela

Shahi Snan, royal bath, is observed on Kartik Purnima during Pushkar Mela. In 2009, Shahi Snan date is November 2nd. Several lakhs of devotees visit Pushkar Lake and take holy dip on Kartik Purnima. Every year, on Saptarshi Ghat, devotees perform Kartik Snan on a day before Karthik Poornima.

Shahi Snan is also observed in Kapal Mochan Mela held at Kapal Mochan near Yamuna Nagar in Haryana. Kartik Poornima is the last day to perform holy bath during Kartik month in North Indian states.

Kartik Month 2009 as per Bengali Calendar – Kartik Maas dates in 2009

Kartik month is the seventh month and marks the beginning of Hemonto ritu as per Bengali calendar. Kartik month 2009 starts on October 19 and ends on November 16. Some big festivals are celebrated during Kartik in Bengal. As this day is very favorite month for Lord Vishnu and Shiva, major festivals and pujas are dedicated to them during the month. Bhai Phota, Chhat Puja or Dala Chhath Pooja, Jagaddhatri Puja and Kartik Amavasya Puja are the major festivals celebrated in Bengal during Kartik month.

Kartik month begins on 5th October and ends on 2nd November as per the Hindu traditional North Indian calendar followed in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.

Pushkar Fair 2009 – Pushkar Mela during Kartik Purnima

Pushkar Fair, also called as Pushkar Mela, is a scintillating fair celebrated for ten days during Karthik Poornima, Full Moon day in the month of Kartik. But the final four days are most important during the Kartik Mela. Pushkar Fair 2009 dates are – October 30th to November 2nd. This fair is considered as Asia’s largest cattle fair. Pushkar is a small lake town in North Indian state of Rajasthan. Pushkar hosts the world’s largest camel fair organised by the Government of Rajasthan.

Pushkar is a small lake located near the famous Brahma temple in Pushkar town. Pushkar Snan during Kartik month is a meritorious ritual. People believe that the holy water of Pushkar Lake cleanses all the sins committed by them and cures many diseases. This event attracts a large number of pilgrims.

After performing ritual bath in Pushkar Lake devotees visit the temple of Brahma, the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma in the world. Brahma is offered prayers and stutis. In the evening, thousands of lamps are lit and released into the water of Pushkar Lake with the help of leaf boats. This is a marvelous event to watch.

Govatsa Dwadashi 2009 – Nadini Vrat

Govatsa Dwadashi, also known as Nandini Vrat, is observed on Kartik Krishna Dwadashi as per North Indian calendars. Govatsa Dwadasi 2009 date is October 14th. As per other calendars, this festival falls on Ashwin Krishna Dwadasi day. This fast observed by women for longer life of their sons.

The legend and the significance of Govatsa Dwadasi vrata are mentioned in the Bhavishya Purana. This vrat katha is associated with Nandini, the divine cow, and her calf. During the puja, pictures or idols of Nadini and her calf are worshipped. Devotees offer sprouted moon and gram to the divine cow, Nandhini. People avoid drinking milk and other milk products on this day.

Govatsa Dwadasi is observed as Guru Dwadasi in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and some parts of Gujarat. On this day, Sripada Vallabha Aradhana Utsav are held at Pithapuram Datta Mahasamsthan in Andhra Pradesh. In Gujarat, Govatsa Dwadasi day is observed as Vagh Baras or Wagh Baaras.

Kartik Somvar Vrat – Kartika Somavara Vratham during Mondays in Karthik Month

Kartika Somavara Vratam is one of the pujas to observe during the Mondays in the month of Karthik. Soma is another name of Lord Shiva. Someshvara is Lord Shiva who keeps the Soma, the moon crescent on his matted hair. Kartik Somvar 2009 dates. To please the Lord Someshvara (Lord Shiva), Karthik Somavara Vratam is performed.

When is Somvar Vrata Observed?

Somvar vrata is observed on all Mondays, but there are some special Mondays when it is much more auspicious to observe. According to Hindu sacred texts, Mondays in the month of Shravan and Karthika are the best days to observe Somavara vratha. The Skanda Purana mentioned the holiness or significance of Somavara vrata during Karthika masam.

Karthika Somvara vratham is mainly observed in South India. In North India, Somvar vrat is observed in the month of Shravan month as Shravan Somvar Vrat.
