Radha Saptami Stotram – Ratha Saptami Prayer or Slokam to Surya Bhagwan

Radha Saptami, popularly known as Ratha Saptami, is the festival to celebrate Surya Jayanti. On Radha Saptami, performing ceremonial bath in holy rivers like Ganga, Godavari, Yamuna, Narmada, Cauvery, Krishna, etc. is considered as auspicious. While ritual bath on Ratha Saptami, devotees recite the mantra given below: -

Ratha Saptami Snan Mantram:

Yadhaa janma krutham paapam maaya janmasu janmasu

Thanme rogancha shokancha maakarihanthu saptamee

Etha janmakrutham paapam yachcha janmanthararjitham

Manovaakka yajam yachcha gnatha gnalechayepunah

Ratha Saptami Snan is considered auspicious in Magh Mela and Kumbh Mela snan. Surya namaskar and Surya Argh are also auspicious.

After the ritual bath, devotees give arghya to surya bhagwan on Radha Saptami. Surya Bhagwan is worshipped with Ashtottara and shodashopachar puja and offered jaggary.

Ratha Saptami 2010 – Rath Saptami Puja

Ratha Saptami is one of the biggest festivals observed during Magh month. Ratha Saptami 2010 date is January 22. It is celebrated on Magh Shukla Saptami. Ratha Saptami festival is dedicated to Surya bhagwan and the Lord is worshipped for better health and wellbeing. It falls on the second day after Vasant Panchami or Sri Panchami or Madana Panchami.

During Ratha Saptami, women draw rangoli or kolam or muggu in front of their houses to welcome the healthy and pleasant rays of Sun God. The Rangolis are drawn in a chariot shape signifying seven horses of Surya bhagwan. Punya Snan (holy dips) are performed during Ratha Saptami.

Ratha Saptami, also spelt as Radhasaptami, is one of the biggest festivals celebrated in Magh month. On this day the Sun God is worshipped by people for their better health and wealth.

When is Ratha Saptami?
Ratha Saptami is celebrated on the seventh day of brighter half of the month Magh (Magha Shudda Saptami). In 2010, Ratha Saptami falls on 22nd January, Friday. It falls just two days after Vasantha Panchami.

What are the Rituals and Customs During Ratha Saptami?
The Sun God is drawn with a chariot of seven horses, which represent the rainbow’s seven colours. On this day, people perform Punya Snan (Samudra Snan, Sacred bath in seas or rivers). Rangolis are made in front of every house welcoming the Sun God’s best blessings and his healthy and prosper rays.

Legend or Story or the Myth Around Ratha Saptami:
Once a King called Yashovarma was ruling the Kamboj empire. He was extremely religious and his people were living happily and were praising his ruling. But he had no children to look the country after him. He had become old. He worshipped God to give him a son. Hearing his prayers, God given him a son, who was very sick. The king was unhappy due to his son’s sickness.

A Muni, Saint Vinit came to the king and told him that his sickness is because of his sins he had done in his previous birth. As the remedy to the kings’ scikness he advised the king to make his son to observe vow of Ratha Saptami. King’s son performed the puja on Ratha Saptami and became healthy to rule his people without any sufferings.
