Annapurna Puja is observed during Chaitra Navratri or Basant Navratri especially in West Bengal.  Goddess Annapurna is known as the deity of food and nutrition in Hinduism. In 2010, Annapurna Puja date is March 23rd, 2010. The pooja date falls during Chait Navaratri as per traditional Bengali calendar.

Annapurna Puja festival is mainly observed by women. The important rituals and customs during Annapoorna Pooja day include – recitation of Annapurna Devi Stotram and observance of fast. Annapurna Jayanthi is the birthday of Goddess Annapurna, the Goddess of food and nutrition. In 2009, Annapurna Jayanthi is observed on December 2. Usually, it is observed on Margashirsha Purnima, the full moon day in the month of Margashirsh. Goddess Annapurna is worshipped during the auspicious day with Shodashopachar and offered ‘Annabhishekam’.

Lacking her in Kailash, Lord Shiva was starved for some time and was unable to live without Pravti and food. Lord Shiva realized that the main source and creator of world’s nourishment and feeding is Goddess Parvati, the Mother Goddess. And he visited Kasi and prayed to Goddess Annapurneshwari Devi. He begged her some food and made himself free from starvation.
