Shat tila Ekadasi 2010 – Shadtila Ekadashi or Tilda Ekadasi

Shat-tila ekadasi or Shad Tila Ekadashi or Tilda Ekadasi or Tiladaana Ekadashi is observed on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi in Magh month in traditional North Indian calendar. Shat-tila Ekadashi 2010 date is January 10, 2010. For Smarta sect of people it is on January 10th whereas for Vaishnava sect, the date of Sat-tila Ekadasi in 2010 is January 11. This Ekadasi corresponds with the Krishna Paskha Ekadasi of Paush month or Pushya masam as per Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka calendars.

‘Til’ means the sesame seeds and ‘Shat’ means six, on the whole offering six types of sesame seeds on Sattila Ekadasi is a highly meritorious activity. All other religious activates or rituals remain same as other Ekadashi vratas. Reciting Vishnu Sahasra nama stotram, worshipping Lord Vishnu would fetch merits to devotees.

Shat Tila Ekadasi and Bhishma Ekadashi are considered as highly auspicious days to worship Lord Vishnu. Both Ekadashi days fall during Magh month as per North Indian Panchangams.

Paush Bada Utsav – Bada Festival during Poush Month in Jaipur

Paush Bada Utsav is a month long festival celebrated during Paush month in Rajasthan especially in Jaipur city. In 2009, Paush Bada Utsav (Poush mahina) starts on December 3 and ends on December 31. This festival is celebrated to welcome winter season in a grand manner. Paush mahina is considered as happiest month for farmers because during this maas crop is yielded and brought to their homes.

Hindu people in Jaipur offer special recipes called ‘Bada’ and ‘Suzi ka Shira’ to their family Gods. All temples are decorated with flower garlands and sparkling lights in Jaipur. Each temple organizes the festival on different day during Pausha month.

Samba Dashami 2009 – Samba Dasami or Surya Puja in Orissa

Samba Dashami vrat, also known as Surya Puja, is observed on the 10th day in Shukla Paksha in Pausha month. In 2009, Samba Dashami or Surya Puja date is December 27. This festival is dedicated to Surya Bhagwan, mainly observed in Orissa.

Legends or Samba Dasami vrat katha say that Samba, the son of Lord Sri Krishna, was affected by leprosy. He performed a severe penance for Surya Bhagwan and was cured. On this day, mothers perform Surya Puja to please Surya Bhagawan and to keep their children healthy.

Dhanu Yatra 2009 – Dhanu Yatra in Orissa during Pausa Month

Dhanu Yatra is celebrated during Pausa month or Paush maas in Baragarh of Orissa. Dhanu Yatra 2009 begins on December 20, 2009 and ends on December 27, 2009. The festival starts at 6 am on December 20, 2009 and ends at 11.55 pm on December 29, 2009. Dhanu Yatra commemorates the visit of Lord Krishna to Mathura.

Dhanu Yatra is also commemorates the victory of Lord Sri Krishna over his uncle Kansa. During this festival, people play various dramas based on the the Puranic descriptions. The major celebrations will take place on Pausa Purnima.

Paush Month 2009 – Poush Maas in North Indian Hindu Calendar

Paush month or Poush maas is the 10th month in traditional North Indian Hindu calendar. In 2009, Paush month starts on December 3, 2009 and ends on December 31. Poush maas is considered as inauspicious month as per Hindu astrology. North Indian Hindu calendar is followed in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa and some other North Indian states.
