Ratha Saptami or Surya Jayanthi is the most important festival celebrated at Arasavalli Surya Narayana Swamy Temple, Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. In 2017, Ratha Saptami date is February 3.
This festival marks the onset of spring season. In Arasavalli Temple, devotees will have Nija Rupa Darshanam of Surya Narayana swamy from 1’o clock in the early morning to 4’o clock in the evening.
Ksheerabhishekam (offering bath to Sun God with milk), celebrated in the early morning, is the major event during Ratha Saptami which attracts a large number of devotees.
Surya Narayana Swamy or the Sun God is known as Pratyaksha Narayana. The presiding deity of Arasavalli Temple is the 5 feet black idol of Surya. Beside him, Surya Narayana Swamy has his consorts Padma, Usha and Chaaya consecrated. All these deities are stationed on a grand chariot (ratham) driven by seven horses. Dwarapalakas of the temple are Pingala and the Sanaka muni and Sananda muni.
