In 2013-2014, Margali Masam begins on December 16 and ends on January 13, 2014.
Margazhi Masam, Margali Month, is the ninth month in traditional Tamil calendar followed in all parts of Tamil Nadu. It comes after Karthikai Masam and prior to Thai masam.
Margali Masam is very popular for music and spirituality. In many places of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, Carnatic music concerts are held in this month.
Margali masam coincides with Margashira Masam as per Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati and Kannada calendars and Margashirsh & Poush months in North Indian Hindi calendars. In Malayalam calendar, Dhanurmasam coincides with Margali Masam.
Recital of Thiruppavai and Thiruvembavai, bhajanai and Uniavrithi are the major rituals during this month. Paavai Nonbu (Margali Nonbu) is the biggest vritham performed in Margali Masam.
Arudra Darshanam and Vaikunta Ekadasi are the important festivals celebrated in Margali Masam as per Tamil calendar. On Vaikunta Ekadasi (Mukkodi Ekadasi), Lord Vishnu is offered “Sorgavasal Thirappu”.
