Mahalaya Torpon is a very significant ritual in Bengaliculture. Mahalaya marks the beginning of Devi Paksha and the end of Pitru Paksha. It also marks the traditional countdown of six days to Maha Saptami day.
It is also believed that on this day which marks the onset of Devi Paksha, Goddess Durga begins her journey towards earth from her heavenly abode.
As Amavasya begins at 3.55 AM on 30 September, the best time to perform Shraddha Tharpana rituals for pitru devatas is – after 3.55 AM. ‘Kuthapa Vela’ (the time between 11.36 AM and 12.24 noon) is considered even more highly auspicious for Mahalaya Torpon rituals.
