Kamadahanam is associated with the legend of Kama deva (the God of Love) and Lord Shiva. When Shiva disturbed with the arrows of love by Kamadeva, Shiva burnt him and turned into ashes. After the severe penance, Kamadeva’s wife Rati Devi brought him to life.
Kamadahanam is the similar ritual to Holika Dahan. Sticks, dried cow dung balls, and dried grass are burnt as the symbol of Kama. The sacred ash is distributed among the villagers. Holi festival is known as Kaman Pandigai in Tamil Nadu and Kamuni Panduga in Andhra Pradesh.
