Durvashtami puja or Durvashtami vrata is observed on the eighth day of Shukla Paksha in Bhadrapad maas. In 2016, Durvashtami vrata date is September 9.
This vrata is mainly dedicated to Durva grass blades.
On this day Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati (Gauri) are worshipped with Durva grass blades. Devotees also observe fasting or upvaas on this day.
In some places Lord Shiva is also worshipped with bilva patra (bell leaves) and flowers. The Lord is also offered special naivedya or nivedan after the vratham. Those who perform Durvashtami puja would get rid of all sorrows in life.
Durvashtami vratam is also observed as Radhashtami in Vaishnava temples. This is the appearance day of Radha Devi, divine lover of Lord Sri Krishna.
