Chandramouleeswarar Temple, Tiruvakkarai, Viluppuram

Sri Chandramouleeswarar temple is located in the village named Tiruvakkarai, in the district of Viluppuram, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The main deity of this temple is Chandramouleeswarar (Lord Shiva) and his consort is Amirthambikai.

The holy tree of this temple is Vilwa. The holy water of this temple is Surya Pushkarini. The agamam or pooja of this temple is known as Kameeyam. This temple is nearly 1000-2000 years old in this region. The historical name of this place is Vakrapuri.

As per the local pundits and scholars, “The Lord of the temple is praised in the Thevaram hymns of saints Tirugnana Sambandar and Sundarar. This is the 30th temple in Thondai Naadu region praised in the Thevaram hymns.”

The festivals that are grandly celebrated are Karthikai Deepam in November-December, Vijayadasami in September-October; Vinayaka Chaturthi in August-September; Thai Kruthikai in January-February; Aadi Kruthikai in July-August; Kanum Pongal on the next day of Makara Sankranti falling almost on January 15; Tamil Near Day falling almost on April 14 with Chandra Mouleswarar float festival; One day Chitra Poornima Vakrakaliamman procession in April-May, Vaikunta Ekadashi, Amavasya, Pournima and other Lord Shiva related auspicious days amd important religious day with great devotion and dedication.

Special pujas and rituals are conducted in this temple on all Tuesdays and Sundays that is dedicated to Lord and Mother Goddess. Navami and Ashtami days are grandly celebrated in this temple. Even special pujas and rituals are conducted on Shivarathri day. It is the most sought after temple in this district.
