Thiruvannamalai Karthikai Maha Deepam 2009 – Arunachaleshwara Karthigai Brahmotsavam

Thiruvannamalai Karthikai Maha Deepam is a festival observed in the Tamil month of Karthikai at famous Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara swamy temple in Tamil Nadu. Thiruvannamalai Karthikai Maha Deepam 2009 date is December 1st. It is celebrated on Kartikai Pournami, the Full Moon day in the month of Kaarthikai. This festival coincides with Krithikai nakshatram. In Thiruvannamalai, Maha Karthigai Deepam is celebrated for 10 days. It is popularly known as Karthikai Brahmotsavam.

On first day of Karthikai Deepam festival, the celebrations begin with Dwajarohanam. Procession of Lord Chandrasekhara swamy is commenced on the second day during the festival. Surya Vahana seva is performed on the third day. Kamadhenu vahana seva is done on fourth day to Periya Nayagar. On the twelfth day, Karthikai Deepam festival comes to a grand conclusion when Lord Arunachaleshwara is taken our for pradakshina known as Girivalam.

It is also celebrated as the extension of Deepavali. Kartigai Deepam is observed with a lot of gusto and enthusiasm in other temples of Tamil Nadu. The festival is celebrated for three days in the state.

Karthigai Deepam festival is celebrated as Vishnu Deepam in Lord Vishnu temples in Tamil Nadu. This festival is observed as Yanai Pandigai in Mandyam Iyengar community in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

Amavasya November 2009 – Sarva Pithru Amavasya in November 2009

Amavasya in November 2009 is the Kartik Amavasya as per Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati and Bengali calendars. And as per North Indian Hindu calendars, it is Margashira Amavasya. In Novmeber 2009, Amavasya date is November 16.

Kartika Amavasya is the last day in Kartik month as per some calendars mentioned above. It is observed with lot of gusto in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. Kartik Snan are performed during the auspicious day and pitru karma are observed to please the dead ancestors’ souls.

Utpanna Ekadashi 2009 – Utpatti Ekadasi

Utpanna Ekdashi, also known as Utpatti Ekadasi, is observed on Margashirsha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi, the eleventh day in first half during the Hindu month of Margashira. Utapanna Ekadasi 2009 date is November 12. This Ekadashi commemorates the demolition of demon Murasura by Lord Vishnu and it is associated with the birth of Ekadasi Mata. When Lord Vishnu was sleeping, demon Mura planned to kill him. Goddess Ekadasi was born by the divine creation and slain the demon.

To honour the courage and devotion towards him, Lord Vishnu thanked Goddess Ekadashi for killing the demon. He also blessed her that whoever observes fast on Ekadasi will get salvation. Lord Krishna advised to his devotees that to start their Ekadasi upvas on Utpanna Ekadashi or Utpatti Ekadasi. They break Ekadasi upavas on Dwadashi day.

It is to note that as per Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat calendars, Utpanna Ekadasi falls on Krishna Ekadashi day in the month of Kartik.

Maha Raas – Krishna Raas Leela festival on Kartik Poornima

Maha Raas, a festival celebrating the love life of Lord Sri Krishna, is celebrated on Kartik Poornima, the full moon day in Kartik month, in North Eastern states like Tripura and Manipur. Raas Leela is the divine love episode of Krishna’s life. Hindu girls are festooned in the form of ‘gopies’ and danced around the idols of Krishna and Radha.

  • According to the locals, the Maha Raas celebrations in Tripura date back to over centuries when the queen of Manikya Dynasty from Manipur brought the idol of Radha-Krishna and established a Radsamadhav temple in the region. Although Raas is a festival of Manipuri community, today both Hindus and Muslims along with the hundreds of tribals celebrate this festival. Pradyot Kishore Dev Barman, the scion of erstwhile Manikya dynasty termed this festival as one of communal amity.

Kalabhairavashtami – Kalabhairav Ahstami

Kalabhairavashtami, also spelt as Kalabhairav Ashtami, is observed on the eight day in the month of Margashirsha as per North Indian calendar and on Kartik Krishna Astami as per the traditional Panchangam of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat. In 2009, Kalabhairav Astami date is November 9. This day is also considered as Mahakaal Bhairav Jayanti.

On Kaal Bhairav Astami day, Lord Kal Bhairav along with Shiva is worshipped with utmost devotion. In Varanasi and Ujjain, this festival is celebrated with much gaiety.

The legend or Katha of Lord Kalabhairava:

Lord Kalabhairava is an aspect of Lord Shiva. When Lord Brahma became headstrong, Shiva created Kalabhairav to cut his fifth head which was on top of his four heads. Kaal Bhairav sliced off Brahma’s fifth head and made Brahma the ‘Chaturmukha’. To get rid of the sin of ‘Brahma hatya’, Kaal Bhairo visited all holy places in the world and finally consecrated in Kasi (Varanasi) as ‘Kshetra Palaka’ with the order of Shiva.
