Bhakteshwara Vratham is observed on Kartika Pournami, Full Moon day in Karthika Masam. This vratham is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
In 2016, Bhakteshwara Vratham date is November 14. This vrata is dedicated to Lord Shiva and mainly observed in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and in some parts of Karnataka by married women for sowbhagyam (longer life and good health of their husbands).
According to a local legend, on Kartika Pournami, a woman performed Shiva Puja in a very severe manner to protect her husband from ‘Akala Mruthyuvu. Lord Shiva was pleased with her dedication and devotion and ordered Yama, God of death, to leave her husband alive. Since then, on Kartika Pournami day, Bhakteshwara vratham is observed by married women for wellbeing of their husbands.
Markandeya Puranam is recited during Bhakteshwara vratham on Kartika Purnima. Offering lotus flowers to Lord Shiva during the vratam is highly meritorious. On this vrata, Jwala Thoranotsavam is also observed.
