Avani Avittam, Upakarma, Yagnopaveetha Dhaarana

Avani Avittam or Upakarma, also known as Yagnopaveetha Dhaarana, is an ancient ritual performed by Brahmin sect on Shravan Purnima day or Raksha Bandhan day in South Indian states – Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala and in some parts of Orissa. This ritual is called as Avani Avittam in Tamilnadu and Kerala; and Yajur Upakarma in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Why Avani Avittam or Upakarma is held on Shravan Purnima?

Shravan Purnima is an auspicious day for the Brahmins because on this day Lord Hayagriva, the protector of the Vedas, was born. Lord Hayagreeva also referred as the God of wisdom and knowledge.

During the observance of Aavani Avittam or Upakarma, Sacred Thread ceremony (Yagnopaveetha Dhaarana or Janeyu Dhaarana) is performed. This ceremony is observed as the Vedic rituals. On this day, children start their Vedic studies. The day after Avani Avittam is observed as Gayathri Japa Day.

Thanks for procedure on upakarmas. I am a telugu krishna yajurvedi. I seek your advice on the following: 1. Is yagyopaveeta dhaaranam twice – once before kamokarsheth and again after Mahasankalpam? 2. Is pavithram to be worn or not – if to be worn, when? Is the pavithram to be made of two darbhas? 3. What is the manthra for kamokrsheth japa – “kamokarsheth namonamaha, manyurakarsheth namonamaha, kamokarsheth manyurakarsheth namonamaha” or “kamokarsheth manyurakarsheth nmonamaha” only? Thanks. Dear All,

As we all know that Avani Avittam falls on the 13th August, 2011, but we have to remember that ” Avani Avittam means – AVANI AVITTAM KOMANAM . Komanam is a must while performing avani avittam. In olden days, you can see brahmacharis boys say ” Avani Avittam komanam, Ambi porantha sopanam …… ” Brahmacharis should perform avani avittam in only in Komanam / Kaupinam . However, all the other elders should also compulsorily wear komanam / kaupinam.

” KOMANAM PURUSHA LAKSHANAM” ONE NEED NOT FEEL SHY AND ANYBODY HAS NOT STARTED WEARING KOMANAM, THEY CAN START WEARING KOMANAM FROM THIS AUSPICIOUS DAY.

WISH ALL READERS OF THIS FORUM ” A HAPPY AVANI AVITTAM KOMANAM “

Someone had remarked about Komanam. Hence thought of giving few lines on same – During our days at Kalpathy, early morning itself we visit individual houses in a group consisting of 6 or 7. In those days, because of cash crunch, many houses resort to Komanam (white dhoti cut pieces). Very few affluent houses docorate our Samuthu (long stick) with ‘red colour komanam’. Notably are CG Rama Iyer of 12th Street, Karikkar of Chattapuram, and one more I don’t remember exactly. Generally when white cut pieces are recd., we leave it at their ‘neyhi’. At some houses, only after we go, they start tearing old dhoti, for which we will never wait and escape from the scene. While Kontha Vadyar (Balu Vadyar’s father) will delilver his Sankalpam for group coming from 12th Street, Old Kalpathy, Venttakurumakan Kavu, Ramanatha Vadyar (Rockvoice) will take up Sankalpam for exclusive New Kalpathian. The river banks will have huge gatherings of brahmins in those days. I was pained to watch the same surrounding of 2010 Avani-avittam (through a net display) with limited brahmins, and no water in the river and dried up. Really it was all a Golden times. Still there are still so many things of past living ever fresh in my memory, but time and space forbids me to write. This is Viswathan (ex 12th street, Kalpathy – kvichu008@yahoo.com)
