Ashwin Month or Ashwayuja Maas – Aasoj or Ashshin Mahina

Ashwin month (Ashshin, Aasoj or Ashwayuja maas) is the seventh month of the Hindu calendar. Ashshin is the sixth month as per Bengali calendar. The month of Ashwin is the sixth month according to India’s national civil calendar. Ashwin mahina is the second month in Sharad ritu or Autumn season. Usually, Ashwin month falls in September and October. Asoj maas in Gujarati calendar concludes the Gujarati year and the Kartik Sud 1 marks the beginning of New Year in Gujarat.

As per Hindu constellation, Ashwin is the first star to appear in the evening sky. And it is also the first star among the 27 Nakshatras in Hindu astrology. The word Ashwin also means light in Hindi language. As per Hindu Mythology, “Ashwins” represent the Divine Twins who are considered as Gods of Vision. Many important festivals are celebrated in Ashwin maas.

Ashwin mahina begins with Pitru Paksha in North Indian Hindi calendar and ends with Sharad Poonam Lakshmi Puja. In Marathi, Gujarati, Telugu & Kannada calendars, Ashwin month begins with Navratri Kalasha Sthapana and ends with Diwali Amavasya.
