Ashwin mahina (Ashvina maas, Ashwin month) is the 7th month in Hindi calendars followed in North India. In 2016, Ashwin month, Ashwina mahina starts on September 17 and ends on October 16 in North Indian Hindi calendar.
Ashwin month is the third month in Chaturmas, four holy months in Hinduism, and considered auspicious because of Durga Puja or Durga Navratri festival falls in the month.
Hindi Ashwin mahina begins with Mahalaya Paksha and ends with Kojagari Purnima or Sharad Purnima. Mahalaya, also known as Shraddh paksha or Pitru Paksha, Navratri Durga Puja, and Kojagari Lakshmi Puja are the important festivals in Ashvina mahina. Hindi Ashwin month coincides with Kanni masam and Thula masam in Malayalam calendar and Purattasi and Aippasi masam in Tamil calendar.
Navratri Durga Puja starts on first day of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month and ends on Mahanavami or Vijayadashami with Durga Udwasan puja. Ramlila is celebrated in North Indian states during Navratri festival.
Mahalakshmi Vrata which starts on Bhadrapad Shukla Ashtami will conclude on Ashwin Krishna Ashtami. On the last day of Hindi Ashwin mahina (Ashwin Purnima), Kojagari Lakshmi Puja is observed.
