Akshay Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is an auspicious festive day in Hinduism. In 2011, Akshaya Trithiya date is 6 May, Friday (today). Devotees believe it is an auspicious occasion for charity, donations, and to buy gold, silver, and other valuable items like cars, 4 wheelers.
Akshay Tritiya is mentioned in several Puranas and other Holy Scriptures. Many legends and stories are associated with this festival. Kuchela met Sri Krishna after a long time and got abundant wealth on this day. Kubera was appointed as the Banker of the Heaven on Akhatrij day. Goddess Annapurna was born on this day as per some legends.
Many temple festivals are celebrated on this day. Lord Parshuram Jayanti is also celebrated on this day.
Basaveshwara, the social worker of 12th century and the founder of Lingayatha or Veera Shaiva sect of Hinduism, was also born on Akshaya Tritiya day as Basava Jayanti is also celebrated on this day.
Chardham Yatra, the holy tour to four historical temples in Hinduism – Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath temples, begins on this day and continues till Diwali (Kartik month).
Lakshmi Puja, Kuber Puja, Gauri Puja, and Krishna Chandan Puja are the most auspicious rituals to follow on this day.
Chandan Jatra is celebrated in Puri Jagannath Temple on Akshay Tritiya. Chandanotsavam is the ritual observed on this day in Simhachalam Narasimha swamy Temple in Andhra Pradesh.
