Today is Amavasya (30 July 2011: Shani Amavasya), the No Moon day in Hinduism. It is Shravan Amavasya in North Indian Hindi calendars. Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, and Telugu calendars consider it as Ashada Amavasya. Amavasya begins at 02.04 am on 30 July 2011 and ends at 12.10 am on 31 July 2011. It is also observed as Shani Amavasya as it falls on Shanivar (Saturday).

This Amavasya is observed as Gatari Amavasya in Maharashtra; Haryali Amavasya in North India; Chukkala Amavasya in Andhra Pradesh; Bheemana Amavasya / Divsi Amavase in Karnataka; Sitalagi Amavasya in Orissa; Aadi Amavasai in Tamil Nadu; Karkidaka Vavubali in Kerala; and Deepa Puja in all over India.

Amavasya of July 30, 2011, marks the end of Ashad month in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka. And it marks the end of Krishna Paksha of Shravani month in North Indian Hindi calendars.
