21 July 2014 is Aadi Krithigai. It is an important festival dedicated to Lord Murugan (Skanda). It falls on Krithigai Nakshatra in Aadi Month as per Tamil calendar.
The Skanda Purana describes the legend associated with Aadi Karthigai.
Aadi Karthigai is celebrated with lot of gusto in Aarupadai Veedu (six prominent temples) of Lord Muruga. Special pujas and homas are performed on Aadi Karthigai day to please Murugan. Kavadi Yatra (carrying kavadis and offering kavadis to the Lord) is the main ritual of Aadi Karthigai day.
Not only in Tamil Nadu, but also in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka, Aadi Krithigai is celebrated with utmost gaiety. Sri Kalahasti Temple in Andhra Pradesh, Ghati Subramanya Temple and Kukke Sri Kshetra are the temples to visit during Aadi Krithigai.
