Durga Navaratri celebrated in Ashwayuja month is the most popular and the biggest event in Southern India, especially in Karnataka. Mysore Navaratri 2009 begins on 19th September and ends on 28 September. Mysore Dasara celebrations are very popular and attrats large number of pilgrims from all over India and from foreign countries as well.

As per the local belief, Mahishasura Mardhini or the slayer of demon Mahishasur is Goddess Chamundeshwari. In avatara of Chamundeshwari devi the Mother Goddess demolished the demon. Chamundi is the fierce form of Goddess Durga who is very similar to Maha Kali or Bhadrakali. During Navratri, Goddess Chamundeshwari devi is worshipped in 9 different alankara. The temple of Chamundeshwari located on the hillock called Chamundi Hills near Mysore.
