Ganesh Chaturthi, popularly known as Chovoth Festival, is one of the most celebrated festivals in Goa. In 2009, the date of Ganesh Chaturthi festival is August 23. As Ganesh festival celebrates the birthday of Lord Ganesha, Ganesh Navratri is celebrated with utmost devotion and fervor in Hindu communities of Goa and Konkan region. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated for 9 festive nights, also known as Ganesh Navratri, till Ananta Chaturdashi. Ganesh idol is installed in Ganesh mandaps or pandals on Chovoth or Ganesh Chavithi day. On the first day, devotees welcome the God with drums and bhajans. Chavithi puja is performed with utmost fervor on the first day. The second day onwards, Ganesh Puja is done twice a day, morning and evening. Various cultural activities like singing competitions, dance competitions and bhajans are conducted. The winners are rewarded with prizes. On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, Visarjan or Nimajjan of Ganesh idol (Ganesh immersion) takes place. In Goa, most of the Ganesh idols are immersed in Arabian Sea. Between the beats of drums, bhajans and dances by devotees, Ganesh idol is immersed in water bodies with a jubilant festivity.
