Anant Chaturdashi Vrat – Anata Padmanabha Vrata

Anant Vrat, a vrata dedicated to Lord Ananta Padmanabha Swamy, is observed on the fourteenth day in Shukla Paksha during Bhadrapad month (Bhadra Shukla Chaturdasi). Anant means the infinite and endless. Anant Padmanbha is Lord Vishnu reclining on Snake Ananta in Anata Sayana posture. The Anant Sayana posture of Lord Vishnu resembles his concern and thoughts about the Universe and its prosperity. It is believed that Anant Padmanabha thinks about the future of the world.

Anant Padmanabha puja makes devotees free from all their sorrows and keeps them in active form to obey any type of challenge from their enemies. Throughout India, Anant Chaturdashi vrat is observed with utmost devotion. In North Indian states – Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and some more regions, in South Indian states – Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Anant vow is observered.

Especially, in South Indian states, Ananta Vratham is observed in festive atmosphere. Special sweets and other recipes are prepared on the day and half of them are offered to Brahmins. Anantha Vratham is observed for 14 consecutive years for marital bliss and prosperity of the family.

Anant Charturdashi is the culmination day of Ganesh Navratri festival or Ganeshotsav. On this day, Ganesh Visarjan (Ganpati immersion) is performed.
