Avani Avittam – Upakarma – Yagnopaveetha Dhaarana

Avani Avittam or Upakarma, also known as Yagnopaveetha Dhaarana, is an ancient ritual performed by Brahmin sect on Shravan Purnima day or Raksha Bandhan day in South Indian states – Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Kerala and in some parts of Orissa. In 2010, Avani Avittam is observed on August 24, Tuesday. This ritual is called as Avani Avittam in Tamilnadu and Kerala; and Yajur Upakarma in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Why Avani Avittam or Upakarma is held on Shravan Purnima?

Shravan Purnima is an auspicious day for the Brahmins because on this day Lord Hayagriva, the protector of the Vedas, was born. Lord Hayagreeva also referred as the God of wisdom and knowledge. During the observance of Aavani Avittam or Upakarma, Sacred Thread ceremony (Yagnopaveetha Dhaarana or Janeyu Dhaarana) is performed. This ceremony is observed as the Vedic rituals. On this day, children start their Vedic studies. The day after Avani Avittam is observed as Gayathri Japa Day.
