Shani Trayodasi – Sani Trayodashi

Shani Trayodasi is an auspicious day for Hindus as it is the birthday of Shani Dev, who is also known as Shanaischarya, Sani Bhagavan, Shaneesvara, Saneeshvaran or Mandeshwara Swamy.

When is Shani Triodashi Observed?
Shani Trayodasi is observed on the thirteenth day of a fortnight when it falls on Saturday. In 2009, Shani Trayodashi is celebrated on 7th February, June 20, July 4.

Who is Lord Saneeshwar?
As per the Hindu astrology, Navagrahas (Nine Planet Gods in Hindu astrology) are the nine primary celestial gods. Shani is also considered as the Lord of Saturday. The word Shani itself indicates the seventh day of a week. Shani is a celestial god and son of Sun and his wife Chhaya . Shani is also known as Chhayaputra (son of the Goddess of Shadow). Since he is son of the Shadow Goddess, he is described as having a dark complexion with a handsome face.

What is the Significance of Lord Shani (Saturn) in Hindu Astrology?
Sani is considered as the Deity of Karmas (deeds). According to the Hindu astrology, one can lead the life based on native karmas done by the particular person. A person’s fortune depends on his birth chart. The birth chart mainly focuses on the location of Sani. One’s astro predictions can be told mainly on the basis of Shani’s spot in the birth chart.

Why Devotees Need To Please Lord Shani?
As per the Shastras, it is believed that worshipping shani may minimise the impact or effect of shani dosham (defects in one’s birth chart or the bad deeds done by the native during the previous birth) on their life.

What are the Rituals and Customs during Shani Triodashi?
Devotees and believers of Shani dosham perform Shani dosha puja to please Shani and to bless them with reduced or minimised effects of Shani dosha. Some people observe fast on the day of Shani puja.

What is the Procedure of Shani Graha Shanti Pooja? How Shani Puja is performed?
During Shani Shanti Pooja (Observance to calm Shani), devotees perform ‘Thailabhishekam’ (A ritual using til oil) to Shani’s idol and offer a piece of black cloth, black til, fruits and coconuts. It is observed very strictly as they believe if they won’t perform with devotion Shani may curse them badly.
